Location

21 Via Scardina , Porticello, Italy

Porticello is a small fisherman village being part of the municipality of Santa Flavia. The origin and development of the little town comes from the Tuna fishing activity. From the 16th century the fishermen settled permanently in this small seaside town that began to grow very quickly becoming an important fishing centre.

The town, called at that time 'Pirrera', which hosted in its pits generations of fishermen, was renamed 'Porticello' (small port) because of the natural bay called San Nicolicchio around which grew the new location and where you can still admire, almost intact, the older houses.

Porticello has so many secrets and stories. According to the legend, some fishermen found at the bottom of the sea the picture of the 'Candle Madonna' (Madonna del Lume). She became the protector of the village. The picture is still visible in the rustic church dedicated to the Madonna.

The geographical position, the beauty of the coast and its many spots overlooking the clear blue sea, the many restaurants offering the famous 'Porticello fish' still prepared according to traditional recipes, make this place a gem that survived almost intact during the centuries. Imagine, it is still possible to buy fish directly from the fishermen at the port, not in the market but from the boats, immerged in the sounds, shouts and phrases of the markets of the past.

Your journey to discover the beauty of Sicily can begin starting form this simple and authentic place! Discover the wonderful little coves where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful sunsets from the surrounding hills!
